Angel, High School Student, CA

Angel S.JPG

A good life is: 1) to have a house with a good amount of bedrooms; 2) to finish high school and go to college and study construction or to study about cars; 3) to have a good job that can help me afford what I want.

Ange is a high school student in California.  He was interviewed by a fellow student, Josh, as part of a #schoolpartnership #studentvoice project with REENVISIONED, in which students interview each other and adults in their lives, and reflect together on school and what makes a good life.

What's your name?

Angel

Tell me about yourself how would your friends describe you?

I don’t know there's not much to describe. Probably active and, I don't know, angry.

How would your family describe you?

My family probably would describe me as an angry person.

Can you take me through your day at school today?

Let me see today I came in at like 9:40 and went to advisory.  Then I had English, and right now I have world history.

What was the best part?  Probably English it was chillin -  it wasn't hard.

What was the worst part? Coming here because I had to wake up early.

Was it a normal day if not what parts were not normal?  It wasn't a normal day because there was a job fair today in the cafeteria. I went to the job fair but i didn't really ask anything there was people from the army

Imagine yourself when you’re 30, all grown up – what are three things you think would make a good life when you’re an adult?  What do you want?

1) to have a house with a good amount of bedrooms;

2) to finish high school and go to college and study construction or to study about cars;

3) to have a good job that can help me afford what I want.

How do you imagine what your parents would answer is similar or different

Honestly I do not know.

What would you like school to do ideally to help you get to the good life?

If school started later then I would come everyday.  And, if there was more classes about construction or some classes like that, then it would be more helpful for me.

How do you imagine  your parents answer is similar or different?

It's probably different but I don't know how.

Do you think this school will do that for you why or why not?

No they will not change the time school starts but yes in different schools they have programs like construction classes

Will your  school play that role for all students in the school if not why not

I can't really answer that one because I just want to come late.

What do you think is the most important that you're learning in school?

Probably math because it’s gonna be an everyday thing and it's gonna end up helping me later in life.

Can you tell me about a time when you learned something that felt empowering, either in or out of school?

Outside of school I learn boxing.  I’ve been doing boxing for a year and kick boxing for a year - so 2 years in total.

Why do you think we have schools as a society?

So we can get a good education and get a good job. To get taught about things were gonna need to know for when were older. To have a good job that means it can support you and your able to buy a house from working

10,000 Stories. One Shared Vision.

REENVISIONED is a national movement to redefine the purpose of school.  We believe schools should foster flourishing individuals and a thriving democratic society.  But what does it mean to thrive or flourish?

To answer this, we're building the world's largest collection of stories about what it means to live good lives and the role schools should play in helping create them: 10,000 stories from people across the country.  We'll use the stories to learn about our shared values and dreams and to create a new vision for why we send our children to school.

We work with people like YOU across the country: Catalysts - individuals, classrooms, schools, and community organizations - who interview people in their communities and foster empathy nationwide by sharing the stories on our website and social media:  Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook (@reenvisioned).
